Mid-Winter Update from Wellington Hockey

Dear Hockey Whanau,


I thought I would write you a note to give you an update on some exciting things happening around our community, heading into the last few weeks of the season.


COMPETITIONS REVIEW

We are about to undertake a competitions review to look at the structure and purpose of all our competitions, to make sure they are fit for purpose and delivering what our community wants and needs both now and into the future.

This is being undertaken by Peter Dale Consulting and is completely independent of Wellington Hockey

We will send out further information shortly, from Peter to clubs, as to how and when he will be in contact with you. I would like to take this opportunity to urge everyone in our community to feed back to your clubs on your thoughts on our current competition structure, and any changes you think will have a big impact on our sport. This is an opportunity to set ourselves up for the future and will work best if we have full buy in from our community.


LIVE-STREAMING CAMERA

We are about to take part in a pilot, through Cello Communications, of a camera that will be fixed on the pavilion and will cover NHS1. This will mean that we will be able to live-stream games played on there. The games will then be available on an app for coaches to use for coding and player development, as well as umpires for umpire development. We are very excited to see the possibilities for this type of technology, and if it works as well as we hope then we will look to purchase one for NHS 2 next season.

There are, of course, privacy issues to sort through and as a result we will not be streaming any junior games this year, and we are currently speaking to College Sport around the secondary competition.

If any senior players have concerns around being filmed please let us know and we can make alternative arrangements for your games.

FACILITIES

While it may seem at times that there is not much happening in this space, please be assured that this is an area I spend a considerable amount of my time on, and there is a lot going on in the background. We have six turfs that WHA are directly responsible for, and these fall into four different councils, each with their own processes and timelines. This can be at times frustrating, but we are making progress and I will update accordingly now.

Maidstone Park – we actively participated in the forums held by UHCC around the $12 million that the park was given by the government during Covid. After a through process UHCC have decided to invest the money into the shared clubrooms that are being built next to the rugby fields at Maidstone Park. They have agreed to build the changing rooms and toilets we lobbied for and have allocated the money for this in the 2023/2024 financial year, subject to the money being available.

My thanks to the Upper Hutt Hockey Club for the time they have also spent on this process, which was considerable.

Here’s to us hopefully having toilets in a couple of years time!

On another note the council have allocated funding for LED lights to be put on the Park, and all going well these will be up and running before next winter – there are some considerable delays in getting the necessary fixtures and fitting into the country at the moment, which is part of the reason there has been a delay in getting the current ones up and running.

The existing lights have had some work done to them and are now good to go for the rest of the season, Emma has now moved games back to the Park. Thank you for your patience during this period.

Fraser Park – Thank you to everyone who sent in a letter of support for our submission to the Hutt City Council for the upgrade to the turf. Your support was greatly appreciated by all of us at WHA. Unfortunately, we were not successful in getting any money from the council from the Long Term Plan process.

All is not lost though, and we continue with our plans to upgrade the turf at the end of this season. We are now reaching out to our funders, and initial conversations have been very positive, we hope to have some good news to share in the near future.

Please remember that the café and Bar are available over the weekend in the Ricoh Sportscentre, and all of our Hockey family are very welcome in there.

Elsdon Park – we are currently meeting with the Porirua City Council and Wellington Water around their plans to build a stormwater wetland and a flood protection bund at the Park, and the impact this will have on the turf in a 1-100 year flood (maybe we just had it on the weekend!!!).

The work will have an impact on the turf, and the Wellington Region Hockey Stadium Trust are heavily involved to ensure the best interests of Hockey are taken into account with any decisions made.

NHS – And now to NHS!

We have just had the LED lights installed on NHS2, which means that all lights are now LED’s across the three turfs. Hopefully you have all noticed the difference and are enjoying the extra light!

The model we operate under at NHS is different to the other turfs (again six turfs – four councils) and the Wellington City Council are responsible for the turf replacements at NHS. Last year they commissioned a report into the performance of NHS 2 and as a result have scheduled the replacement of the turf for the end of the 2022 season (next year). Until then they have upped their scheduled maintenance on the turf to ensure we can get the best out of it for the reminder of it’s life.

The Pavilion is obviously in dire need of repair and again, we are working with the Council on this. The Council are responsible for the outside of the building, while we are responsible for the inside. There are significant watertightness issues, with the rain coming through via the windows and leaving the chipboard damp, causing it to swell and disintegrate. The Council are working through this with us, and again, I hope to have some positive news to share in the near future. Once we can protect the building from the weather, we can then get on and look at what we can do to upgrade the inside to make it a better space for us all.
