October 09, 2020

Dear Hockey Community,

Over the past two weeks Wellington Hockey has hosted teams from Hockey Manawatu, Horowhenua Hockey and Hockey Wairarapa with U15 and U13 festivals. These have been held at Maidstone Park with sunny conditions, while our Wellington teams shared accommodation at Silverstream Retreat with some of our neighboring teams.

Needless to say, the players had a blast!

In 2020, WHA has led significant change in our youth space by creating an In-Season Development Programme as opposed to the previous Rep campaigns. This approach has seen two programmes run alongside each other giving well over 200 kids development opportunities. It was fantastic to see the programme culminate with two festivals with our neighbouring associations joining in the fun and learning.

There was plenty of great hockey played with most games good even contests ensuring all players and coaches had plenty of opportunities to grow and develop in a great environment.

Thank you to our neighbouring associations for contributing to the success of the festivals and to our amazing coaches, managers and umpires, who all helped with lots of learnings and shape some great memories for our young people.

We had photos of these on our Facebook page and some more below.

We are about to start our Summer Hockey Leagues over Wellington, so make sure you don't miss out on entering a team at NHS, Elsdon, Fraser or Maidstone or in our Master's Comp for our senior players.

We also have our first National Masters trial on this Sunday at NHS (see info below).

We hope you are enjoying the sun as the weather improves and look forward to seeing you around over the summer months.

World-class players to feature in new Premier Hockey League //

The Vantage Black Sticks players and many former internationals will go head-to-head in the inaugural Premier Hockey League starting next month.

The eight-team (four men and four women) round-robin competition will run over four extended weekends from 12 November, and will now be held in Hamilton to ensure the wellbeing of all participants.

The league was postponed from an August start date due to the recent Covid-19 outbreak in Auckland.

Hockey New Zealand has today announced the squads and the team names for the new league.

The four teams will be called the Northern Tridents, the Hauraki Mavericks, the Central Falcons and the Southern Alpiners.

Our Hockey Development Officer Bjorn has a borderline famous beard that he is willing to shave for a good cause at the end of October!

All money raised will go to Canteen - to help them support young people come to grips with the emotional and practical toll of cancer.

You may be keen to help out a great cause or just see Bjorn's beard finally go - either way, we would love to make a difference!

We are inspired by the work of CanTeen New Zealand and wanted to support them by raising money. Please help us help them by giving whatever you can using the 'Give Now' button.

The more people that know about CanTeen New Zealand, the greater their impact, so please also spread the word by sharing our page with your friends and family.
