Friday night hockey is back in 2020 with the launch of the Sporting Edge Premier Hockey League for our P1 & P2 Secondary competitions. Matt and Ata from Sporting Edge have a long history of involvement in the secondary space, coaching and helping young people grow and fulfil their potential, so we are excited to be teaming up with them to bring our local competition to life. There have been some exciting changes from 2019, with the competition taking a local focus, providing great opportunities for our local Wellington College’s.
The P1 competition sees the return of some familiar schools and the addition of a couple of new ones, relatively inexperienced at this level lately but they will make up for that with plenty of enthusiasm! 8 teams will line up in both the boy’s and girl’s competition with an initial round robin, before teams spilt off into a top 4 / bottom 4 round to finalize positions for the final series. All teams will return for the final series which will be played out over 3 weeks.
It is exciting to have the P2 boy’s and girl’s competitions also joining the Friday night lineup. This competition will have 6 teams each, and teams will battle over two rounds before wrapping up with a 3 weeks finals series of their own. It is predicted that this competition will be a tightly contested battle going on previous years history, so will bring plenty to the menu of hockey on offer on Friday nights.
Matches will be predominantly played at three hubs, Kapiti, Maidstone and the home of hockey, the National Hockey Stadium, making the turfs the place to be on a Friday night for plenty of action and school pride on the line.
Look out for some insights into the teams and how they are shaping up in 2020, before a preview of all the week 1 match ups. Make sure you are at one of the turfs on Friday night to take in all the action, as the best secondary school teams in Wellington compete in the brand-new Sporting Edge School Premier Hockey League where you can’t fake passion!
