Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about our junior, secondary school, and open grade competitions. This FAQ page provides key information for players, parents, clubs, schools, coaches and officials.

Junior Hockey

School Years 3-8

The Junior competition is a club and school-based competition for players at primary and intermediate school age (Years 3 - 8). All matches are played on Saturday mornings at venues across Wellington. The competition is split into three grades (Mini Sticks, Kiwi Sticks and Kwik Sticks) based on Year Level at school.

FAQs for Parents
  • Registrations for all junior hockey teams are run through clubs or schools in PlayHQ. Clubs or Schools will send out a registration link through PlayHQ prior to the season. You can search for your club or school in PlayHQ here. If you do not have a PlayHQ account, create one here.

  • The Junior season generally starts in the first weekend of Term 2 (May) and concludes at the end of Term 3 (September). Dates are confirmed early at the start of the year!

  • All junior games are played on Saturday mornings at various turfs across the Wellington region such as NHS, Fraser Park, Elsdon, Maidstone and Kapiti. You can find more information about each turf in Wellington used for competitions here.

     

    Please check the draw for specific times and venues for your games.

  • Yes, all junior grades are mixed with the exception of Kwik Sticks (Years 7 & 8), where there is a girls ONLY grade along with a mixed grade.

  • Players need a hockey stick, shin guards, a mouthguard, appropriate footwear, and their team uniform.

  • Game schedules are available on PlayHQ with quick links to the site also available on the Junior Competitions webpage.

  • Notify your team manager or coach as soon as possible so they can make arrangements.

  • Training schedules are determined by the club or school team. Attendance is encouraged to develop skills and teamwork.​

  • Yes, players can play in our representative teams such as U13 and U15. Information on these development programmes are shared on our U13 Development and U15 Development webpages along with our social media channels during the season.

  • Wellington Hockey will notify clubs and teams if games are canceled due to weather. Updates are posted on our website and social media channels.

FAQs for Coaches/Team Managers
  • Teams must be registered through the club or school administrator via PlayHQ admin portal. Clubs/Schools will receive an invitation at the start of the season to join the competition. Once accepted, you are then able to register your teams into the appropriate grades within the competition.

  • Team size varies by grade. Use the Junior Competition Handbook and How to Hockey Guide to find out our recommended team sizes for each grade.

  • Mini Sticks (Years 3 & 4): 4-a-side on ⅛ fields

    Kiwi Sticks (Years 5 & 6): 6-a-side on ⅓ fields

    Kwik Sticks (Years 7 & 8): 7-a-side on ½ fields

  • Results should be entered into PlayHQ by the team manager or coach after each game.​ Wellington Hockey uses the results to re-grade teams so that they are playing teams of similar ability to create an enjoyable and meaningful competition.

     

    Please note that a club or school administrator needs to assign you as a coach or team manager for your team with management access enabled to allow you to enter results on PlayHQ.

FAQs for Junior Clubs/Schools
  • Draws are published on PlayHQ here. Wellington Hockey will notify club and school administrators once the draw has been published and if there are any changes.

  • Discipline matters, including player or coach misconduct, are managed in accordance with Wellington Hockey’s Code of Conduct and disciplinary procedures outlined in the Junior Hockey Handbook.

  • Notify the Wellington Hockey Competitions Manager at competitions@wellingtonhockey.org.nz as soon as possible to avoid disruptions to the draw.

  • Yes, players should remain in their assigned teams unless there is an approved reason, such as injuries or availability issues.

  • Turf bookings can be made through our online booking portal or by contacting our Sports Administrator at info@wellingtonhockey.org.nz.

  • Teams need to supply an umpire for each game. Wellington Hockey recommends that these should be secondary school students or siblings of a player in the team that are keen to get involved and learn how to umpire. These umpires can access our training programmes like JUMP (Junior Umpire Mentorship Programme) and receive support from our umpire coaches who are typically our more experienced senior umpires.

Secondary School Hockey

School Years 9-13

The Secondary School competition is a school-based competition for players at college that are in Years 9 - 13. Matches are played mid-week afternoons and evenings at venues across Wellington. The competition is split into three grades; Premier, Year 9 & 10 and Reserve.

Open Grade

Senior Competition

The Open Grade competition is a club-based competition primarily for adult players. Matches are played either on Saturday or Sunday afternoons and evenings at venues across Wellington. The competition is split into two divisions with multiple grades within; Premier and Reserve.
