Under 11 Development
Under 11 is the first age group that Wellington Hockey offers development opportunities for players and this is the start of their development journey.
Learning to Train
Phase Two, "Learning to Train," in the Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) model is vital for young field hockey players, generally between the ages of 8 to 12. This phase focuses on developing fundamental movement skills and basic sport-specific techniques, providing a foundation for future athletic success. Emphasis is placed on teaching players how to train effectively, introducing them to structured practice sessions that include a variety of drills to improve their agility, balance, coordination, and speed. Players begin to understand the importance of practice and repetition in skill acquisition, while also starting to grasp basic tactical concepts and the rules of the game. This stage prioritises enjoyment and fostering a love for the sport, ensuring that training is engaging and fun to promote long-term participation and commitment. By the end of this phase, athletes should have a solid base of fundamental skills and a growing tactical awareness, preparing them for the more intensive training to come during their hockey journey.
SPRING into Development
We are excited to introduce the new U11 SPRING into Development Programme, designed for young players to further develop their skills and game understanding. This programme focuses on building a strong foundation in fundamental hockey techniques, while also introducing new and exciting skills. Through small group training sessions, participants will work on individual skill development, with a strong emphasis on executing basic skills and, where appropriate, learning more advanced techniques.
This programme is open to players of all abilities and aims to create a fun and supportive environment. Alongside skill development, players will experience the benefits of teamwork, collaboration, and sportsmanship through enjoyable games and challenges. As the programme progresses, players will have the opportunity to test their skills at an end-of-programme event, allowing them to apply what they've learned in a game setting.
