Nathan Watt 5 July 2000 – 22 May 2018
Along with many others, the Wellington hockey community has been deeply saddened by the sudden death of Nathan Watt on 22 May. A Year 13 student at Hutt International Boys’ School, Nathan was a talented sportsman, playing 89 consecutive games for the Hockey 1st XI as a sound defender. He debuted as a year 10 student at the India Shield in Christchurch where HIBS gained the Bronze medal against Otago Boys High School. He was also in the Cricket 1st XI; in both teams playing alongside his younger brother Harrison.
Nathan had been a Wellington Hatch Cup Under-13 representative in 2013 and played for Wellington Under-15 in 2014.
His parents Peter and Lea have had a long association with Hockey particularly with the Upper Hutt Club. Both Nathan and Harrison played for both the Upper Hutt and Hutt Clubs. Peter is Director of the Junior School at HIBS and has organised Hockey there for the past 10 years whilst Lea is the current manager of the HIBS First XI.
Nathan was a cheerful, willing boy with a wide circle of friends. In both cricket and hockey he took an active interest in younger players, helping and supporting them as they found their feet at the higher level. On the turf he was an outstanding leader and skilful, determined defender.
HIBS’ game against Rathkeale College was deferred until 30 May when HIBS won 4-1 in front of a large crowd of supporters at Maidstone Park. It was a fine tribute to Nathan and to the resilience of the team he did much to engender.
Wellington Hockey’s heartfelt condolences go to Nathan’s parents, brother and wider family, to his many friends and to his fellow students and teammates.
